KATHMANDU/July 2: The Madhesh province of Nepal now has a comprehensive study that sheds light on the status of media within the province. The research, titled “The state of journalism in Madhesh province,” has been successfully completed by a team of esteemed researchers, marking a significant milestone in understanding the dynamics of media in this diverse and culturally rich province.
The study prepared by OUTREACH MEDIA Pvt. Ltd., was commissioned by Mass Communications Authority of Madhesh Province in collaboration with journalists and media organizations across eight districts of the province.
The research delved into various aspects of media in Madhesh, including print, broadcast, and digital media, as well as the challenges and opportunities faced by media practitioners and stakeholders.
The findings of the research offer invaluable insights into the diverse media landscape of Madhesh, exploring the ethical aspects of journalism, media ownership patterns, post COVID-19 impact in small newsrooms and the impact of digital media on local journalism. The study also provides a comprehensive analysis of media regulation, ethics, and the role of media in promoting social cohesion and democracy within the region.
“We are happy have completed this extensive research on the media in Madhesh province,” said stated Laxman Datt Pant, the lead researcher of the study.
Thanking OUTREACH MEDIA and its research team, Shyam Sundar Yadav, Chairman of the provincial Mass Communication Authority hoped that the research findings will serve as a crucial resource for journalists, policymakers, and media organizations, guiding efforts to enhance media professionalism and promoting media freedom in Madhesh province.
The OUTREACH MEDIA carried out an in-depth content analysis of 16 media outlets on the basis of indicators set out to analyze ethical standards, interviewed over 25 media experts and consulted over 200 working journalists across eight districts in the province. The study team comprised of a group of media researchers including renowned media scholar Laxman Datt Pant, media experts Kamal Dev Bhattari, Dr. Sri Ram Khanal, Priyanka Jha and Hadis Khuddar, a journalist based Madhesh province.
